Transitional Justice Workshop: Contemporary theories and practices

September 2016

Conference program

The Transitional Justice Workshop (September 18th - 23th, 2016) will be held at the St. Andrew’s Scottish Guest House in Jerusalem. This workshop has been organized for the benefit of our doctoral students and other researchers from Palestine, Israel, and Germany, who are involved in the DFG-funded trilateral ESO Project as an opportunity to learn together. Professor Shifra Sagy has directed the organization of the workshop in partnership with the Fredrich Schiller University of Jena, our partners in the ESO project. The workshop aims to familiarize the project members with concepts and dilemmas of Transitional Justice, and encourage them to consider the relevance of TJ to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

This workshop includes several invited guest speakers (and roundtable participants) because of their unique expertise, which was deemed highly relevant to our workshop aims. We let all of them know that they are welcome to participate in the entire duration of the workshop, and we hope they will take advantage of this opportunity and contribute further to our joint learning process.

The workshop will consist of panels, a roundtable discussion, and two internal ESO Project sessions. We have asked that to the extent possible, panel speakers should conduct their talks in a manner encouraging broad participation of workshop participants. We have distributed all the materials that speakers felt the participants should read ahead of the workshop including a variety of literature as well as draft papers in progress. The roundtable discussion on 21.9 will provide a chance for local and regional activists to express their views on the applicability of TJ to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The last two sessions of the workshop are internal sessions of the ESO Project, in which project members will share their ongoing studies (work in progress) in the framework of the ESO Project. These sessions are open to any of our guest speakers wishing to attend.

The workshop program also includes a tour of Jerusalem (by Ir Amim), a visit to the Museum on the Seam, and an event organized by IPCRI.
